From Tarot to Playing Cards

Nine Lives Playing Cards (bridge and poker size) are inspired by, in particular, the court cards in my illustrated tarot deck Nine Lives Tarot. Here, you can follow the creative process and see comparisons between the two decks.

Aces and Jokers play significant roles in in shaping a deck of playing cards. The aces in Nine Lives incorporate dual symbols (from both tarot and playing card) – and the Jokers became signature cards, representing artist with house cat ;).

Not only did the royal characters require new outfits for their appearance in the deck of playing cards… they also had to be flipped on their heads (mirrored), so that players at opposite ends of a table would be able to admire and appreciate their royal panache.
